On the JKR vs RDR thing

sciencegeekThe only positive thing to come out of this is that future authors will have the benefit of this ruling and will be able to see where Patterson found the Lexicon deficient (for lack of a better word right now), and what needs to be done for the book to be published.
What I found interesting reading the document (ruling? )submitted by the judge (court?), RDR didn't act in bad faith, and did not have to submit the manuscript to JKR/Scholastic because the book was not derivative (if I read it right), and therefore JKR does not automatically get control.
That all being said, I think it sad that SVA as well as RDR suffered (and still suffer) such terrible and merciless attacks in order for a clearer understanding of this annoyingly murky law to be determined.

on 2008-09-09 06:37 am (UTC)Well, it's just a shame that JKR singled out one fan and let the really rabid people harrass him for months. She could have called for people to be adults about it, and realize it was just a case about copyright not life and death. But then she couldn't have had her big emotional days in court.
I'm sure she believes that only she suffered in all this. I hope she enjoys her $6,000. She could throw that much money in the fireplace and never miss it.
